Radar monitors saw the Japanese attack approaching, but were told that it was a fleet of planes expected from California. The Japanese sent two waves, thirty minutes apart. In about two hours all the battleships (which were clustered in battleship row) were damaged or sunk.

The memorial sits perpendicular across the sunken ship.
