We had some time in Illinois before we had to head back to Indianapolis International Airport. We chose to visit Lincoln’s home in Springfield.
The visitor center.
Lincoln’s home. “Abraham Lincoln lived at this house, on the northeast corner of Eighth and Jackson streets, for seventeen years, from 1844-1861.”
The historic site has been preserved as it would have appeared in Lincoln’s day, with wooden sidewalks, old lamp posts, and dirt roads. Even the neighbor’s historic homes are preserved and styled as they would have originally looked, with plaques that explain the significance of the previous occupants.
Lincoln propaganda: “Union, Liberty, Honor” on the far banner and “People’s Badge, Honest Old Abe” on the near one.
