If you look up hidden gems in Washington State, you might find the hobbit house at The Brothers Greenhouses in Port Orchard.
It’s named “The Brothers” after a double-peaked mountain in the Olympic mountain range.
And the greenhouses part is self-evident as soon as you get out of your car and start walking around.
There’s six and a half acres of gorgeous plants.
Owners Marilyn Davis and Cheryl Pelkey planned to build some sort of structure in the space at the back of the property (a castle or something), and eventually landed on the idea of a hobbit house. They took a 14-gauge steel culvert pipe, cut off the ends (to make the entry way), and then covered it with wood, rocks, and plants from the nursery, and then they landscaped the area around it.
While I was taking photos, one of the gardeners wandered by and said, “You can open the door, you know.” WHAT. There’s an inside, too! (Apparently the fireplace actually works.)
The view from both sides of the window.
