Diablo Lake is another lake created by damming the Skagit River.
You can see the top of the dam straight ahead.
This was another spot I accidently drove by the day before (the parking was very full and drivers were getting creative, so I didn’t bother to see what the fuss was about).
So I went back early the next morning. It was magical.
I had ordered an extra Beta Bowl from Jupiter in Winthrop so I could have it for breakfast. I sat on this log initially, then alternated standing in the lake or on the shore. (It took about two seconds for the cold to shoot from my toes to my temples, so I didn’t stand in the water for long. But it was awesome.)
The water is milky blue because of “rock flour” suspended in the water. Glaciers grind rocks together, and the resulting dust gets washed into the lake. (This bridge is where highway 20 crosses the lake.)
Panning the lake!
