The local bagel place has vegan options! This is Tompkins Square Bagels.
The owner learned bagels as a teenager in Brooklyn, and he wanted his shop to have the same welcoming feel in East Village.
I’d say he succeeded marvelously. The woman who took my order walked me through the options, made recommendations, and gave her complete attention (despite two men crowding in to give their orders). The staff were kind, and as an introduction to New York customer service it set a high bar.
They had six vegan spreads: plain, scallion, garlic herb, veggie, sundried tomato, and spinach artichoke.
I went with an everything bagel and the garlic herb spread, untoasted. (She said the bagels were so fresh that they didn’t need toasting unless you wanted something crunchy. And she doesn’t toast her bagels, so when in Rome!) It was good. It was really good.
