I call it “subway roulette,” where you go to the nearest train station, get on the first train that arrives, and get off after a random number of stops. (I used an online random number generator.) Then when you get up to ground level, walk east or west until you hit water.
I ended up on an uptown train for 10 stops, walked east, and landed at Carl Schurz Park. (It’s named for the German-born man who was once Secretary of the Interior, in a part of town that used to be German-American.)
It was a lovely park with a promenade along the East River and a great view of Roosevelt Island. (A thin island between Manhattan and Queens–it’s 787 feet at its widest!)
On the way to the park I wandered into something called Fairway Market, which had this eye-catching assortment of olives!
