Parents visit! We didn’t have a plan for the day so we walked to Chelsea Market and realized it was next to the High Line! The High Line used to be an elevated freight train route (elevated because the trains were killing too many pedestrians). Eventually trucks replaced freight trains, and the train line stopped being used.
So they turned it into a linear, elevated park! It runs for 1.45 miles along the west side of town from the Meatpacking District (pictured) in the south to the Hudson Yards in the north.
We started near the south end after wandering through Chelsea Market (pictured).
We found some stacked cars! It’s $700/month to keep your car here, so we were trying to do the math on how much income this lot generates.
There’s this building with an outer shell ON GIANT ROLLERS (you can sort of see the scale with the people reflected in the window to the right). It’s almost like sliding the case off a computer tower, but here it creates a 17,000 square-foot event space. There’s a video on their website.
Once we got to the north end of the High Line, we wandered inland, through Macy’s, to a nice view of the Empire State Building from Herald Square.
And then we turned around and did the High Line in the other direction! This is the north end by the Hudson Yards.
To finish the day, we wandered to Strand Book Store.
Michaelises are big fans of book stores. There’s a story in our family about someone who couldn’t tell if they’d seen my aunt at the airport. They thought, “if she goes into a bookstore, then it’s her.” She did, and it was.
“Come in and get lost in the stacks,” says the banner outside. They weren’t kidding! It was a delightful multi-story maze with random gems everywhere.
