Okay, this was cool. It’s stunning to see the Statue of Liberty in real life, even though I’ve seen it a gazillion times in photos. I couldn’t stop thinking about all the people who’ve felt such hope at this sight. (Things likely didn’t go as well as they hoped, but for that one moment it probably felt like anything was possible.)
We got out of the house early so we could get a good spot in line. Although you make reservations, that’s only for the security checkpoint. After that, you get to wait for a boat, which could take hours (according to the website) if a bunch of people were waiting ahead of you.
There it is! The statue is at one end of the island, and there is a museum at the other end.
The museum has the original torch. (It became too damaged and was replaced in 1984.)
“A Universal Icon.”
At the time when we went, you could only climb as high as the pedestal. But it still offers an awesome view! This is looking toward the museum end of the island.
And back to Manhattan.
They weren’t kidding about the line. It was kind of a thing to get back on the boat, especially in the heat.
Next stop, Ellis Island! (The boats do a loop.)
