When I asked Nene what she wanted to do in New York, her list was short: Veselka. This is their 68th year serving Ukrainian food in East Village. Although it’s the kind of place where only the fruit salad and the French fries are vegan, they were able to sub avocado for chicken in this salad to veganize it. And it was a really good salad!
The front of the store. There’s usually a line, but I took this photo before they opened.
Inside! We went twice, once for indoor seating and once for outdoor seating.
The first time we were there, Nene saw another person with this entree and knew she needed to have it. So she figured out what it was and ordered it the second time we were there. It’s the vegetarian reuben latke (potato pancakes topped with sauerkraut, special dressing, and melted Swiss cheese, with a side of beet-horseradish salad). She claims it was excellent.
