Solo traveler extraordinaire. Looking for vegan food.
San & Wolves Bakeshop 2.22.25
I have been looking forward to this one. San & Wolves used to be a popup at the vegan Meatless Monday event near my house in the pre-pandemic days. (They’ve been popping up other places since then, just not as close to home.) This is the cornbread bibingka in a banana leaf.
It’s a vegan Filipino bakery, and they just opened their brick-and-mortar in Long Beach this month. The lines have been down the block, so I waited a few weeks so I could stand in a shorter line.
They also sell out fairly quickly. This was around 10 am.
In high school we used to wander down to the Baker’s strip mall by the freeway and buy a brown paper bag full of pandesal to share. So good. So soft. Just the right amount of sweet. So I was hoping to try a vegan version, but I’ll have to go back earlier next time. (Oh no.)
I hadn’t planned to buy a donut (since I’ve had donuts), but the low inventory changed my plan. It’s a good thing, too, because this bicho-bicho was really good. It was chewy and had almost a sourdough vibe happening, which was an excellent contrast to the sugar.
This is ube Spanish bread. While the other items were fairly sweet, this one was nice and subtle.
