Hot Tongue Pizza 4.27.25
If you look up a list of the best vegan pizza in Los Angeles, Hot Tongue Pizza is likely to be on it. They started out 100% vegan but had to add animal products in 2023 to keep from going out of business. Sometimes vegans retaliate with cruelty when places do that. I can see both sides, but my internal debate usually settles on “I’m glad someone is offering a vegan pizza option, and I want to try it.” So here I am at Hot Tongue to order a vegan cheese pizza. (Because it’s a truth universally acknowledged that the plain cheese is the baseline test you must start with before you graduate to trying their vegan sausage or their vegan Sicilian, etc.)
They sell vegan pizza by the slice! How cool is that!?
Their pizzas are 18-inch, which I definitely underestimated. (Here it is on the hood of my car.) Final verdict? The dough was stellar, maybe the best sourdough-style dough I’ve tried. The cashew mozzarella cheese, though, wasn’t quite there yet. The sweetness of the cashews came through a bit too much for it to seem like cheese, and the texture was flirting with “mealy.” (I did wait until I got it home to try it, so it might have a better texture if it’s hot out of the oven.)
