Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in Oregon, and it’s the most popular natural recreation area in the Pacific Northwest. Rumor has it that it’s the fourth-tallest waterfall in the United States, but the World Waterfall Database has some choice words about that factoid, saying it’s “flat out wrong” and “an attempt to secure a ‘claim to fame’ for Oregon.”

Not all two million annual visitors were there the day I was, but it sure felt like it. It’s become much more popular than it was 24 years ago when I first saw it. I snagged a shockingly expensive parking spot and felt lucky about it. But the waterfall is mesmerizing, and (much like Vista House) the lodge and the bridge add to the natural charm. (The bridge was built in 1914 and the lodge is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, having been built in 1925.)
