So you might remember the exhausted shipbuilder from my last post. Robert Moran bought 7,000 acres on Orcas Island for his retirement, then he used some of the land for a state park. The state park land includes the highest point in the San Juan Islands, Mt. Constitution, which is 2,407 feet above sea level. And what else would a successful shipbuilder do with a tall mountain besides build a tower on top! Moran entertained several tower ideas from an architect (the Spanish tower idea, the Celtic tower idea, the battleship tower idea) but opted for the rustic tower option to match the state park concept. It rained constantly, so we had to imagine the view, but supposedly you can see to Victoria and Vancouver on a clear day. The view from the top! The other tourists made the most of it, taking selfies in front of a wall of white. By janellemichaelisJuly 12, 2022
