I’d never been to New England, so the idea was to visit Acadia National Park then drive west through New Hampshire and Vermont before heading back to New York. And, since I’ve never been to New England, I know nothing about it. So I googled “Vermont,” and this church in Stowe was the first result. Alright! Going to Stowe, Vermont!
Stowe (established in 1763) is primarily a ski town, but it was adorable in summer.
There’s this awesome walk/bike path that is nicely paved with well-maintained lawns and some bridges that cross Little River. This is the view of the west branch of Little River from the path.
And Stowe even had vegan food at the Stowe Sandwich Company! This is the kimchi-jackfruit slider, and it was tasty.
When I got off the freeway to take Route 100 north to Stowe, I noticed a couple taking selfies by a sign that said “Ben & Jerry’s Factory.” Whaaat? Like THE Ben & Jerry’s Factory? Turns out Ben & Jerry’s started in Vermont. Who knew?! (A lot of you. A lot of you probably knew.) Unfortunately the factory was closed both days I was there, but you can still drive up and check out the flavor graveyard!
Since the factory was closed, I drove over the hill to Smugglers’ Notch Resort where they had a Ben & Jerry’s store. They were out of the vegan flavor, so it was a bit of a bust, but there was some remarkable fog hovering over that side of the hill. I thought it must be a geography thing, where the hill creates this wall of fog with one town socked in and one town completely clear. But it turns out the fog was headed for Stowe, and had made it there by the time I was packing up to leave in the morning.
