So Instagram shows ads, you know. And one morning the ad was for this park that produces its own fog. Well that’s pretty cool, so I Googled the park, and the first photo was …
… the Unisphere from the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. My mom was at the World’s Fair in 1964 and had just been telling me about the Unisphere, and IT’S STILL THERE! (New York also hosted the 1939 World’s Fair, but everything was torn down and reused for the war effort.)
So I got on the train to Queens. When you get off the train there’s this boardwalk that takes you right to the park. (It’s also near Citi Field, home to the New York Mets.)
The boardwalk takes you to a circle with a few sidewalks branching off of it. There’s a mosaic sign at the start of each sidewalk so fair goers would know which path to take. (This is the one for the Hall of Science.)

Here it is! It was a lot bigger than I thought it’d be, and I loved how the continents had sort of a contour map thing going on. The top photo is a scan of a slide from my mom’s trip in 1964, and the bottom photo is mine. (I had to stand closer to the globe since the trees had grown to block out the view in the original photo.)

  1. Wow! You found the Unisphere? Who knew?? I LOVE the two photos of the Unisphere (that I thought was the “Eunicephere”), one from ’64 and one from ’22 that look so very, very similar. Also I love the tree-lined path. Great pictures!

    That is really neat how you put the 1964 version and the 2022 version next to each other.
