Fishs Eddy sells unused, obsolete, surplus, American-made restaurant ware. And at first I had trouble caring, because dishes. But then I went in the store with Nene (who was enthusiastic about the substantial feeling, the weight of restaurant ware), and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
And if you want restaurant ware, Fishs Eddy has all the options. Mugs, platters, plates, ramekins, gravy boats, those fancy dishes that they serve French onion soup in with the cheese all broiled onto the sides, the list goes on and on.
Plus it’s reasonably priced and the variety is awesome. They had a wall of sample plates from the archives of Syracuse China (which goes back to the 1920s). “The markings are under the glaze,” the sign says, “which makes them even cooler!”
I ended up with four over-size pasta bowls that were so heavy that they had to be double bagged two at a time so that I could carry one bag on each arm (and my arms were feeling it by the time I got home). Some might call that an example of letting your possessions own you, but I feel like I’m still the winner here.
