So there’s this sesame bread from Sicily called muffuletta. And the rumor is that in 1906 an Italian immigrant in New Orleans created the muffuletta sandwich at Central Grocery and Deli on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. It’s deli slices of salami, ham, provolone, and Swiss layered with olive salad, and I knew that I needed one as soon as I heard about it. I had no luck finding a vegan version, so I made up a grocery list so I could make one myself. Then while browsing the Breads on Oak menu I noticed the “Muffanada,” which turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. I was everything I imagined, SO GOOD. I’m thinking about getting another one tomorrow.
And this isn’t the second time Breads on Oak has saved the day. When most of my birthday plans fell through, the one thing that worked out was my birthday cake, a praline pecan brioche kringle from Breads on Oak.
When I first saw it I thought it would be too sweet, then when I cut into it I thought it would be too dry, and it was neither. It was really good. The bread part had a ribbon of cinnamon running through it, and it made the perfect bite combined with the frosting. (The entire cake is gone now.)
Breads on Oak is on the other side of the French Quarter from where I’m staying (so there’s a built-in walk with your indulgences.)
It’s entirely plant-based! Everything on the menu is vegan.
And some of their other offerings look amazing. (Biscuit breakfast sandwich anyone?) So I’ll be going back to try more things (if I don’t order the muffanada again).
